President’s Report
This year is the 36th Yakkerboo Festival and my first year as president. After seeing all the hard work that the committee did for this festival last year and that they were struggling for volunteers I decided to get on the committee and help them this year. What I didn’t expect was to take over as President. However the previous president, Graeme Moore, had just become a councillor for the shire and felt he needed to step aside to ease his workload, not sure if this has happened as he still puts 110% into Yakkerboo. It has been great working with the current committee, mostly the same people as last year but with a few new ones too. We would welcome anyone wanting to get involved in Yakkerboo for next year, we only meet about 8 times for the year so it isn’t a big ask and many hands make light work so we would love to see new people.
Last year I asked the then current committee if we could take Yakkerboo and promote it on social media. They agreed and so Yakkerboo was set up on Facebook, we currently have 622 friends and this continues to grow every day. We use it as a way to communicate to locals and keep them up to date with things in relation to Yakkerboo. Please feel free to add Yakkerboo Festival as a friend.
We also now have a website thanks to Ben Macdonald of BGM IT who not only set it up for us free of charge but also maintains and updates it regularly. There is an opportunity for a small fee for businesses to place an add on the website which goes towards helping the Yakkerboo Festival funding. The website is www.Yakkerboo.org.au . All forms for the parade, market, unique vehicle cavalcade and the art show are all available on the website.
We also now have a You Tube account and have a few videos on there. Graeme Moore was recently given a DVD of the entire 1983 parade. We have uploaded a snippet of the parade and will endeavour to get the whole 43 minutes uploaded soon. I loved looking at Pakenham way back then, it looked more like the 60’s.
Yakkerboo is a non profit festival and we rely heavily on donations, sponsorships and grant funding from the Shire. This year after talking to a few of the councillors about the fact that the Yakkerboo Committee hadn’t had an increase in funding for many years even though their expenses went up every year, we managed to get an increase in our grant for which we are very appreciative.
We also have the fireworks again this year and have hired more rides so we are still chasing our tails looking for more funding again this year. We have booked dodgem cars which normally would be out of our reach but Pakenham Central Marketplace have very kindly offered to cover the cost of this ride. The committee were thrilled when told of this. We rely on local businesses for helping in whatever way they can and if anyone wants to help it isn’t too late, you can contact our secretary, Joan Vogels on 5940 1926.
This year we have the carnival in BourkeParknear the station on the Saturday night April 21st from late afternoon/dusk through till the fireworks around 9.30pm. Then on Sunday 22nd April the parade will go alongJohn St from the Library right down to Safeway then turn left and go around the back to IGA then finish inBourkePark near the station. There will be market stalls set up all day between the 2 roundabouts inMain St and around into StationSt. Bourke Park will have all the family activities, rides and entertainment. The following weekend is the Yakkerboo Art Show.
For the 1st time this year 5 floats will win $100 courtesy of Coles Pakenham judged by their store manager. This is as well as the usual awards that are handed out every year. Coles Lakeside will be giving out free bottles of water inBourkePark. We thank both the Coles stores for their offers.
We hope you all come on down and enjoy the day, we try our best to make it a family fun day that is free for families. Lets hope the weather is kind to us.
Yakkerboo President, Michael Porter

Drawing Competition
Hey kids!
Here’s a picture of Mr Yakkerboo for you to colour in – just ask mum or dad to save it (by right-clicking on the image and choosing “Save As” from the menu that pops up) and print it, and when you’ve coloured it all in, send it in to the Yakkerboo Committee secretary, Joan Vogels, at P.O. Box 146, Pakenham, 3810.

Almost there
Welcome to the New Year, and as Mr. Yakkerboo’s birthday comes closer, the committee are working hard to make sure everything goes smoothly. The website is almost done – all of the pages are now up, although some are a little threadbare. But they’re being added to all the time, so check back often to read the latest – or visit Mr. Yakkerboo on Facebook.
Now, this site is close to being the one-stop-shop for everything Yakkerboo. If you’re not sure what Yakkerboo is, you can read a little bit about the festival here, check out an interactive map of everything that’s happening here, enter the Parade, Market or Cavalcade through any of the links under Get Involved, and you can contribute toward the successful running of the Festival by becoming a web-sponsor here.
And speaking of sponsors, each and every year, the Festival could not go ahead without the amazing support from both Cardinia Shire Council and the Pakenham Gazette. Thanks to both of those bodies for everything they do!
And now for some very exciting news. This year, we’ll be broadcasting (at least some) of the Street Parade live on the web! Watch this space!
Welcome to the New Yakkerboo Festival Website
It’s great to have you here. Very soon, this will be the one-stop-shop for all things Yakkerboo. But for the moment, we just have the front page for the latest news, and the Socialise page, where you can find links to our Facebook page and our YouTube channel.
Keep checking back soon – we’ll shortly have entry forms for the Cavalcade, Parade and Market stalls up, plus loads of more useful information about the Yakkerboo Festival for 2012.
P.S. We’re also looking for photos and video/film of the Festival from years gone by, so if you have any, or know of any, and are willing to share them with everybody else, please get in touch here or call Ben on 0434 350 540.
Update: Unique Vehicle Cavalcade entry form is available here, Market Registration form is available here, Street Parade here and if you’d like to become a Web Sponsor you can check it out over here! All of these links can be found under ‘Join In The Fun’
